Zywave Apex: Changing What’s Possible for Insurance Distribution

Table Of Contents

By Eric Rentsch, Chief Product Officer and Head of Emerging Markets, Zywave

I’ve spent most of my career building insurance technology — first as a founder, now having the privilege to lead product at Zywave. That vantage point has made me shy away from the breathless product announcement that also quietly dies the moment it touches a real customer’s book of business. Our industry has sat through plenty of those. So, I want to be deliberate about the words I use today.

Today, we’re launching Zywave Apex™: the first complete AI growth stack purpose-built for insurance distribution. I want to take a moment to explain why I think this launch matters for every producer, advisor, carrier, and MGA trying to grow in this market.

Our Industry Needs AI

We need to continually start with talent, because it’s the pressure everyone feels. The appropriate framing is our industry’s headcount shortage: more than 400,000 roles will open across the industry over the next 15 years, with too few people entering to fill them. We will continue to see talent wars while demand greatly outpaces supply, especially as risks (and demand for coverage to protect them) continue to escalate. And, this framing still undersells the actual problem, because we also cannot hire twenty years plus of judgment. What’s scarce is not only headcount, but the learned experience necessary to deliver excellence to clients in the market.

Every hour an experienced producer or advisor spends on data entry, re-quoting, and chasing documents is an hour of the one resource we can’t manufacture, spent on the one thing we should never waste it on.

So, Why Does Everyone Seem to be Stuck in AI Pilots?

This is exactly why every one of your employees reaching for generic AI is so understandable — and so risky. A general-purpose model will happily answer any question you ask it about a regulation change, a policy, a coverage, an endorsement. The issue is that it answers with the same confidence whether it’s right, or not, because it was trained to sound fluent, not trained to be correct. In most industries, a confidently wrong answer is a process tax or an annoyance. In ours, it’s an unpaid claim for the policyholder, an E&O claim, or active litigation… or all three! Insurance is regulated, relationship-driven, and unforgiving of the gap between fluent and accurate. A tool that can’t tell the difference is a liability wearing a friendly interface.

This is the real reason the adoption remains tepid, despite the self-evident ROI and demand. It was never that the models weren’t smart enough, but that they needed something trustworthy to stand on.

What Makes Zywave Apex Different?

Here’s the shift our industry has been slower to internalize: the model is not a moat. Foundation models are fast becoming a commodity — remarkable, but a commodity. The value doesn’t live in the raw intelligence, any more than your business’ competitive edge lives in the educational degrees from every one of your employees.

It lives in what that intelligence is connected to and grounded in. An AI with no link to your systems and no access to trustworthy insurance data is a very articulate intern who has never seen your business. Zywave Apex is built on trusted insurance data and content, deeply connected to the mission critical systems of record you use today.

What makes this different from everything else in the market is the foundation, rather than one single feature. The foundation is an MCP server — the first purpose-built for insurance distribution. If you’re not steeped in the acronym, here’s what matters: it’s the connective tissue that lets the AI assistants tap into Zywave. Our MCP server connects 24 live production tools directly inside the AI assistants your team is already using, supported by more than 1,000 carrier connections, and combined with 30 years of intelligent insurance content and data. This is purpose-built AI that turns what was once a liability into a foundation for confident growth.

Producer Agent is already generating measurable wins. One of our early adopters, Chris Whitney at Sterling Benefits, noted that, with the Zywave Apex Producer agent, producers are saving 10 hours a week in administrative tasks and putting that time back into growing the business.

Alongside this is our newest offering, Advisor Agent. This solution is built to protect and grow the book you already have. When organic growth gets harder, defense matters as much as offense — and this is the first agent we’ve designed to do both inside the same trusted foundation.

Transforming the Growth Model for Insurance AI

The forces reshaping insurance distribution have been converging for several years. What’s been missing is a platform built to address all of them at once, inside the specific regulatory, compliance, and relationship context that insurance demands.

Zywave Apex is that platform. It doesn’t replace the expertise and relationships that make this industry work. It gives that expertise more room to operate by executing the administrative burden with the knowledge and expertise necessary to operate at scale.

Within my team, we’ve been saying for months that the carriers and brokers building around AI now will be the ones setting the standard for the next decade. Today, we’re giving every producer, advisor, carrier, and MGA in our network the tools to be one of those organizations.

I couldn’t be prouder of what the team has built. And I’m even more interested in what you’re going to do with it.
