The Leader’s Edge Podcast: 3 Takeaways From Zywave’s Chief Product Officer

Table Of Contents

As artificial intelligence reshapes the insurance landscape, few voices carry more weight than those of the practitioners building the technology. In Episode 249 of the Leader’s Edge podcast, recorded on-site at the 2026 Employee Benefits Leadership Forum, Zywave Chief Product Officer and Head of Emerging Markets Eric Rentsch joined host Sandy Lox for a candid conversation about the insurance talent crisis, the promise of agentic AI, and what meaningful AI deployment requires.

Here are three takeaways that are particularly relevant to any industry leaders navigating this moment:

1. AI in Insurance Is a Capacity Solution, Not a Cost-Cutting Measure

The narrative that AI threatens insurance jobs misses the more pressing challenge facing the industry. As Eric explained it, “Our industry doesn’t have that problem. Our industry has a ‘we don’t have enough people to service the premium growth’ problem.”

Most insurance markets are experiencing premium cost growth of seven to eight percent annually, driven by rising underlying risks. Labor growth, by comparison, runs at one and a half to two percent. Compounded over a decade, that divergence means producers and account managers are effectively being asked to manage double the volume with a workforce that isn’t growing at the same rate.

That challenge is amplified by an impending generational transition, with as many as 50% of experienced insurance professionals expected to retire within the next 10 to 15 years, as noted by Eric. In that environment, AI is a necessary tool for sustaining the workforce rather than a disruption.

2. The Meaningful AI Opportunity Lies in Agentic Workflows, Not Chatbots

Much of the AI activity currently underway in insurance, including chatbots, document Q&A, and basic automation, represents only a fraction of what the best technology can deliver. Eric drew a clear distinction between exploratory use cases and the more consequential opportunity ahead.

“What people are starting to see the opportunity for is real agentic AI — where the software is actually doing things in applications,” he said. “Moving data around, preparing documents, structuring information for a renewal, helping pre-write a summary plan document or open enrollment materials. That might be six hours of work that you could do in 20 minutes.”

Agentic AI doesn’t simply respond to prompts but executes multi-step workflows autonomously. For brokers and agencies, that translates into meaningful capacity gains: renewal preparation, prospect research, and client communication handled at scale, without requiring producer involvement at every stage.

Zywave Apex™, released July 7, delivers agentic workflows and insurance intelligence that are accessible through custom UIs or AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot. Apex, the first AI platform built specifically for insurance distribution, includes:

  1. Zywave Apex MCP: the first MCP for insurance distribution puts 30 years of Zywave data intelligence inside the AI assistant you use today.
  2. Producer Agent: Automates your best prospecting process for every producer from ICP definition to booked meeting.
  3. Advisor Agent: Automates your best renewal process from prioritization to updated quotes.

3. A Coherent AI Strategy Begins With Identifying Organizational Constraints

In the interview, Eric observed that many brokers and agencies are engaged in AI exploration without a clearly defined strategy for where to begin. His guidance? Start with the area of greatest operational constraint.

“If you’re having a really hard time filling a role — if you can’t hire fast enough for a particular function — that’s your first starting point for your AI strategy,” he said. “That’s where you should point your energy and attention.”

Whether the bottleneck is renewal workflows, open enrollment communications, or new business prospecting, AI investment is most effective when it is concentrated where capacity pressure is highest. That approach yields faster, more measurable outcomes and builds the organizational foundation for broader deployment over time.

For those still in a holding pattern, Eric had this to say: “There are folks who have found that this works and are actively deploying it, and it is addressing very real problems. Explore it with confidence and lean in.”
